A Moment of Reflection on 2007

A Moment of Reflection on 2007
Before we start the new year, it is only appropriate to reflect on your accomplishments for the year. For some, 2007 was the year in which belly dance was introduced into a woman's life, others continued to grow in the dance, and professional belly dancers continued to shine.

So what will 2008 bring? Only you can answer that question. As dancers, we strive to become like those who are accomplished, and some of us hope to become a well known dancer. We strive to make ourselves better than the year before and so on. The only way to make 2008 different than other years in the past, is to know your past and to know where you stand at this very moment in time.

Only recently did I discover my love of dance when I viewed a DVD that my aunt left to my mother early this year. On that DVD, was a party that my mother's family had when I was in the sixth grade. It was the Fourth of July and my grandmother was having a great time dancing to Tejano music with her sons and son-in-laws.

As the DVD played out, I noticed that the only person who kept dancing throughout the entire party was my grandmother. It was then that I realized my grandmother is my root, my foundation, for my love of dance. Indeed I had established my past.

Something from your past, whether it is from a person or even a belly dance performance that inspired you when you were a little girl, is your root. When you know this answer, keep it close to your heart and let this memory or knowledge of your past continue to have a place in your life. The only way we move forward is to know our past.

With this knowledge, you know now where you stand today at this moment and why. You accomplished something this year. Even as you read this, it doesn't take much to recall that particular accomplishment. If 2007 was the year you danced in your first belly dance routine, you have accomplished a great deal. If 2007 was the year in which you choreographed your first belly dance routine, then hats off to you. Be proud of what you have done and look forward to the year to come.

It is almost 2008, in fact, it is just a few hours away. Should you read this before midnight, I want you to dance silly for just a few minutes. Just dance to energize your goddess spirit and to honor what you have done.

My wish for you, is that you continue to grow, love always, laugh much and learn from others who are wise.
