Pit Droids are Oodles of Fun!

I passed by this game the first time I wandered the shelf, because it looked like a kids game that would be too boring for adults to play. I do love the pit droids, though, so when I wandered by again I picked it up just to see what it was all about.

The picture of lines of pit droids marching on the back of the box immediately brought to mind Lemmings, a game I love. Further reading proved that it was a logic puzzle and strategy game. And it was cheap! Under $20. I grabbed it and added it to my collection of boxes.

Even the install (pretty huge, over 200mb) had great drawings, sort of "illustrators ideas" for the cut scenes. You get to the intro video, which was smooth and deliciously lovely on my P2-300. Watto, looking quite realistic, hovers and tells you your mission - get the lemming/pit droids to the end of a series of mazes.

The interface is fun! The pit droids have a lot of character. There's a 3PO training ground, where he helps you through all sorts of mission types to teach you how to use your tools. They're easy to understand, but some of the maps are devilishly hard. You get arrows to redirect them, but often arrows only work on one droid color or type. Some droids have helmets and bodies of different colors! You have to get the right combination of arrows to get around slicing fans, smashing walls, through locked areas, you name it.

You can have multiple saved games, so different people can play and save their progress, or save along the way and go back to try again. Like all good puzzle games, they start out easy, working up to more difficult puzzles as you go. They're random! Every puzzle, while the same "style" is different. You can turn on grids for lining things up, turn off the buildings to see better.

And the graphics and cut scenes are great! You can feel sorry for the stranded pit droid, angrily tapping his foot. You laugh at the antics of the droids in the cut scenes. You chuckle as they walk over the transformer, suddenly being spray painted blue instead of their previous yellow color.

My ten year old and I both love this game. It's puzzle-making section even lets you load in other peoples' puzzles and create your own. Make some puzzles, and send them in to our Puzzle Library!
