Jet Force Gemini
This has got to be one of the most-hyped games of the season. First there were videos sent to peoples' homes, with play-action views of the graphics in the game. Then there were WalMart TV commercials, full page write-ups in Newsweek, front page covers in gaming magazines.
Is it worth the hype?
Well, first off, it did get us to run out and buy it as soon as the game was available. We had to see for ourselves, after all! The movies introducing the characters were fun, with little details like coffee being spilled to show they had made an effort with them.
Gameplay itself is reasonably good - you get used to the aiming and moving systems pretty quickly, and the graphics of the evil ants and other bugs are pretty impressive. You're rescuing cute little teddy bears from evil arachnids. Don't you think someday we could rescue the crunchy spiders from the evil cuddly bears? Ah well.
The game is rated for violence, but I have no problem at all playing with my ten year old. There's only green bug blood getting splatted every once in a while! Hardly anything compared to some of the nasty full-motion video that you see in computer games. I think this is pretty suited for all ages, except perhaps toddlers that will run screaming at the site of a 20 foot tall ant.
The game itself is pretty standard. You're on a jungle planet. Shoot these ground drones. Shoot these flying drones. OK, you're in a ship. Shoot those flying drones. Shoot these ground drones. Search for switches and traps. The interesting aspect is that you eventually get to take over three different characters, each with its own unique strengths and weaknesses.
Worth the hype? Maybe. A fun game to own and play? Definitely!
