The key with 99 Nights is to kill as many people as you can yourself, and to equip the best power-ups you find in order to boost your gameplay. Make sure you scour every map to get all the hidden chests lurking around. Immediately equip anything that seems useful.

I tend to tell my troops to hang back. That way they don't get hurt and I get all the kills. It depends on your skill level - if you need their help, by all means have them come along.

Make sure you play the tutorial levels, and play them multiple times if you want. The better you learn those basic skills, the more quickly you can ramp up in actual gameplay.
