It can be REALLY frustrating to write or say the correct thing and to have the game give you a wrong score because it did not understand it. Part of the key of this game is training YOURSELF to use the correct pronunciation and drawing skill so that you are understood. Here are some tips.

Speaking
Red - This one is pretty easy and rarely misunderstood. Make sure it's short and sweet.
Yellow - The only two syllable word in the set, so make sure that you don't slur it.
Black - The key is the "AH" here, say that part clearly.
Blue - EVERYBODY has trouble with blue. It is classic. I find if I just say LOO that the game is able to distinguish this from other words.

In general the key with speaking is to be calm, clear and to keep the DS a full foot away from your face. Don't yell, don't bring the DS in closer. That will NOT HELP. Be clear and calm, and that gives you your best chance.

Writing
1 - Straight up and down, this is easy
2 - Anything Z-like will qualify fine here
3 - Make sure you go out and in, out and in to get a 3 and not a 1
4 - A classic problem. It MUST be the 4 that is like an upside down h, NOT like the 4 you see here in this instruction set with the pointy top. The H part of the 4 MUST cross the up and down line part.
5 - This is pretty easy and rarely misunderstood
6 - Make sure you have a curve to this, that it doesn't start out looking like a straight up and down 1.
7 - Another classic problem. Do NOT cross your 7 like many Europeans do. Make sure you have an angle so it doesn't look like a 1.
8 - Connect your 8 and you'll be fine
9 - Another pretty straightforward one

In general, you usually have a half second to hit ERASE before a bad number is accepted, just in case the system didn't understand you. Take advantage of that and hit that ERASE quickly if you have a problem.
