Shrines
Shrines are extremely important in Diablo 2 - they're a quick way to regain your magical power, or to heal your wounds, or to help you run for longer distances. Note that not all shrines recover their ability to do their wonders, and that they're randomly generated and placed in each level.
In your travels you might encounter two kinds of shrines. The first give you a one-shot boost in something. The second put an icon over your head and give you a short-term effect of some sort. Note that you can only have one effect going at a time - touching another short-term shrine will cancel out the first effect and start up the second.
One-Shot Shrines
Well: Not really a shrine, but these both heal you and restore your mana.
Health Shrine: restores your health (red globe). Note that this is an instant fix, unlike potions which are a gradual healing.
Mana Shrine: this temporarily increases your mana recharge rate. Always good for those magic-types.
Refilling Shrine: One of the better shrines to find, this recharges both your health and your mana. Watch for these!
Short-Term Effect Shrines
Experience Shrine: this shrine temporarily increases the experience earned by various actions - killing enemies, killing more enemies, and so on.
Skill Shrine: temporarily increases your skills - for example a skill might go from Level 1 to Level 3. Handy for those Barbarian dudes.
Stamina Shrine: While this is active, your run bar turns blue. You can now run as much as you wish without becoming tired out. Good for those mass-o-monster situations where you need some distance.
Gem Shrine: If you're the gem-happy sort, this shrine will either hand you a gem or randomly upgrade one of your existing gems to the next quality level.
Action Shrines
Portal Shrine: This creates a town portal, to get you back home quickly!
Exploding Shrine: This gives you a bunch of bombs - always fun to play with when you have friends around!
Fire Shrine: This shrine is great if you're under attack. It shoots out 8 firebolts in approximately the 8 cardinal points. Be sure to duck!
