When you start Saint's Row, you get to customize your character a bit. You choose a caucasian, African-American, asian or hispanic. You can do tweaking to your character, although he's always male :)

You begin the game as a casual, typical 20-something guy wandering the streets, talking with prostitutes. A few guys in yellow come across some Rollerz grafitti and decide to cover it up. Of course the blue guys - the Rollerz - immediately show up and they get into a fight. Next thing you know, red guys show up in a car and say "Hector says, Buenas Noches". They open fire on both the blues and yellows.

In the exchange, the red guys' car is blown up, and a blue guy finishes them off. A yellow guy then kills the blue guy and prepares to shoot you too, just for being there.

BANG - two purple guys show up to save you. The big guy is Julius, and his friend is Troy. Julius tells you to come by the church and talk with them.

Then you start with actual gameplay. You begin facing the church, on Mission Beach, in the Saint's Row District.

There's no real benefit of doing anything else before you go into the church, so go ahead on in.
