OK, you're through the gate and can see all the miscreants below the tracks. Go left and you find the girl there. She "belongs" to Cirkos, who it turns out is the barkeep right next door. She says that the Bourgoff brothers know about coal and while she seems to be a self sufficient girl in a rough town, she makes prissy comments about coal being "smelly". Strange.

Head to the shop on the right with the sign. This is a bar with only a barkeep to talk to. This is Cirkos. He's not much help, but there are four horses that cry out to be puzzled with. Leave them for later.

Back by the girl, go left now to the bottom of the coal hopper. You find an engine that is out of gas and a button which can't start a gasless engine. You also find an empty gas can - take it. You can go around talking to everyone now about gas - the colonel, oscar, the bartender. Nobody will help you. To make things even more annoying, the barkeep says he wants to talk to Hans about the horses - but when you go talk to Hans, he won't even talk to you about it!! Very bizarre.
