Zoo Tycoon Walkthrough
10: Paradise Island

This is a 36 month mission, where you have to get:

Zoo rating: 80
Guest happiness: 93
Animal happiness: 95
Suitability: 85

Most people have trouble getting that suitability of 85 with some of the animals. You can ONLY use animals they give you, that are endangered. So be very careful not to sell any.

To start with you get 2 bengals, 2 siberians and 2 leopards. Sell off all the native trees and paths on the island to get cash. Start with the leopards to the immediate left against the wall, a nice long cage. They like savannah and water. Start researching the cave immediately, you'll need it. Turn off research as soon as you get it. Put the bengals opposite the path from them. Put the siberians on the hill to the right of the entrance of the park. Add a food court at the ending loop on the left and a gift shop and carousel in the middle right as people come in. So far so good, all of these exhibits are easy to get to 85.

Now you're given a second wave of animals. 2 black bears, 2 grizzly bears, 2 leopards. Start with the black bears. Put them next to the bengals, opposite the leopards. THey like deciduous/confierous. Now put the grizzlies on the far left wall. Again, confi/decid. Now it's around January, year 2. Add in the leopards above the grizzlies against that left wall. They like rainforest. Start building a food court over to the right for the people that go visit those siberians and make things a little pretty for your visitors. They should be happy and all your animals should be too. So far so good.

Now it's around March, year 2. You get in 2 moose and 2 elephants. Add in the moose to the far right. They love weeping willows. Above the moose, put in an elephant cage. You have to research an elephant house. Both of these guys like flat ground to terraform a bit, but in general these guys should be pretty happy too.

Ok, October Year 2. The flamingos come in. I get tons of questions about these flamingos and their seemingly continual unhappiness. Actually it's easy once you understand the game. Flamingos don't just want "8 little rocks and 3 little reeds". They want lots of OPEN SPACE plus some decorations. So don't stick their decorations in the middle of their open space! That's like buying paintings for a house and then scattering them on the floor so you have to step around them when you walk. They want them somewhere they can look at them, but where they don't interfere with their wandering around. So line up the reeds two-deep along one wall of the cage. You'll find you get get WAY more of them in before they get unhappy, which makes them quite content. Then put a two-deep row of little rocks on the other side of the cage. Now assign a zookeeper to their cage only so it's always very clean. That gets them up to their suitability very easily.

Around now you should win the Quality Care prize ($5,000) and the Customer Satisfaction prize ($25,000). You also get the award for 10 diverse species but you don't get cash for that. By now your entrance fee can be around $30 and your people are still thrilled at the animals they get to see for that money.

You can sell of the parents if you get one of each sex in kids, as the animals breed. Research better zookeepers and better food and such, to keep the animals very happy.

If you make this point too quickly, you'll be saddled with Giant Pandas. So it's a balancing act if you think you have enough time to make them happy or if you want to keep the other animals just unhappy enough until the very end so the Pandas don't appear. Be warned, once those boxes appear, the Pandas are unhappy within them. So you then have to get them great cages in order to win the level.
