French director and critic Francois Truffaut
Roger Ebert flunked French 5 times, as revealed in the documentary "Life Itself". He was a fan of French New Wave directors like Truffaut, however. He also enjoyed explaining why a film worked or not. He wrote over 6,000 reviews during the course of his career as a film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times. Discover more about Ebert in my latest review.
Jia Zhangke has been called one of the most important directors in the world. His latest film "A Touch of Sin" is now available on DVD. "A Touch of Sin" won the best screenplay award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. It landed on most critics' best of 2013 lists. The film examines corruption, and the violence that occurs when people are driven beyond their limits. The images are arresting, but also graphic and disturbing. I won't be doing a full review on the Drama Movies page, but I would recommend this film to anyone interested in world cinema.

Life Itself Film Review
"Life Itself" is a candid, poignant and inspiring documentary about film critic Roger Ebert. Ebert lost his lower jaw to cancer and was unable to eat or speak as a result. He never stopped writing, however, about the subjects he loved; film and life itself.
