"There is a well-known truth that can be taken from that saying: 'A healthy mind in a healthy body.' The opposite should probably also be true then – without a healthy spirit (which would mean arts and culture) there is no harmony, health or happiness in the human body, let alone, therefore, in the very society in which we live. Each smart government should know that even in the most difficult times (wars, global economic crises, natural disasters, etc.) one cannot and should not forget the spirit, which makes people stronger and more resistant in their struggle with the difficulties of life." Rade Serbedzija
Serbedzija plays a Czech writer in the film "Prague Duet", but his statement above (from a 2015 interview) is more intelligent than anything his character is given to say. That is why I created a new subject category on the site titled "Guilty Pleasures". Serbedzija's performance makes the film worth watching, despite its many flaws.
Serbedzija often ping-pongs between roles on television (he played Prince Kuragin in season five of "Downton Abbey"), stage, and film. He also moves between Europe and the US, putting his linguistic skills to good use. He has made films in his native tongue (Croatian), Macedonian, Italian, and English. He also has a new film, "The Guardian Angel" that is directed by Finland's Arto Halonen and was photographed in Denmark.
Most of the news concerning the film world was coming from France this week, as the Cannes Film Festival just wrapped up. Congratulations to Sofia Coppola, who won the Best Director award (the second woman to do so) for "The Beguiled". Her remake of the Clint Eastwood film will be in theaters beginning June 23rd. The top prize went to satirical drama "The Square", from Swedish director Ruben Ostlund. Elizabeth Moss is in the cast, but no US release date has been announced. American crime drama "Wind River", from writer-director Taylor Sheridan, was also well-received at Cannes. Nominated for two awards, it will hit US theaters in August. You can check out the trailer featuring stars Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner online.
