"If I was interested in being as famous as possible, then I would have done things differently." Actor/Producer Viggo Mortensen
Viggo Mortensen released two films in 2014, neither one of them in the English language. "Far From Men" is set in Algeria in the 1950s, with Mortensen playing a French schoolteacher. His Danish character in "Jauja" is working in Argentina, so he speaks Spanish and Danish. For his 2007 film, "Eastern Promises", he learned Russian. When you count his native English, that means Mortensen has been able to act convincingly in 5 different languages.
Mortensen's linguistic abilities give him the opportunity to work with interesting directors from around the world. Argentine Lisandro Alonso, who directed "Jauja", makes films in which his characters appear isolated, almost stranded within a particular landscape. In an interview, Alonso stated that he first chooses a location for a film, then decides on the story and characters to fit the landscape. Alonso has no interest in making commercial/conventional films. He doesn't clutter the frame with objects and people; he enjoys silence. If you are willing to accept his terms, I think you will have a rewarding experience watching "Jauja".
Back in the US, the Directors Guild of America announced its group of honorees for the 2015 DGA Honors. Among the list of 5 names is film editor Thelma Schoonmaker. Schoonmaker has edited every picture directed by Martin Scorcese since "Raging Bull" in 1980. She is also the winner of 3 Academy Awards and numerous other prizes. Schoonmaker is to be rewarded for her "trailblazing work in editing." Ron Howard and Tyler Perry will also be recognized at the October 15th ceremony in New York.
