November 22 2010 Editor Assistance Newsletter
I have finally finished my preparations for our big server update. This will update the server we run our main website on - the public pages and the admin pages. This is *separate* from the server we run our mail and forums on. So the mail and forum areas are NOT being touched with this update.
We are moving our main website to a completely new, bigger, better server.
Since this is our quietest time of the week, I am going to do the changeover now!
For the new editors who haven't been through this before with us, here is how it works!
1) I'll temporarily block your access to the admin area. That way you don't mistakenly update the old server while it's being turned off.
2) I'll then move our database to the new server. That way it has 100% of all changes from the old server.
3) I'll start the new server "going live". This is a rollout process. It propagates across the web in waves and can take anywhere from an hour to 12 hours to reach the whole world.
4) You'll know you're on the new server when you go to the admin area and it says *** NEW SERVER *** on the top of all pages. Well actually you'll know you're on the new server when you can actually get to functional pages again :) But they will also say NEW SERVER on the top to reinforce the idea.
The site will always be "up" for our visitors! They never see an interruption. It's just us editors who notice the interruption, in our admin areas.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this process, and I'll send you more emails as I move through the steps!
This will make everything faster and smoother for the holiday season - enjoy!
