Thank you to everyone who chimed in on times for the Google+ chat. It looks like the best time for most would be 9pm on Tuesday, September 2nd. Mark it on your calendars! If you can't make it, we will post a log after for you to read. Google+ is critical for all web projects, so it's well worth getting familiar with.
I've heard from a number of editors that they've seen substantial boosts in traffic after implementing Twitter promotions. It's a valuable tool in your web arsenal. If you haven't read that chat log yet, I definitely recommend it!
CREATING AN EBOOK
I realize that tackling a new project can feel daunting. We also know that the more one does something, the easier it gets. Driving a car that first time was probably quite scary. Now, hopping in a car to go down the street is probably done without a thought. The more we do something, the easier it gets.
To show how easy posting an ebook can be, once you practice, I decided to start and complete a new ebook today. This ebook is "Conquering your Fear of Spiders". Several of my friends are quite afraid of spiders, and it seriously impacts their life. Some won't even go outside in the summer, despite wanting to do various activities. Fear also releases stress hormones which damage our bodies. So the more we can do to at least "tolerate" situations, the better. You don't have to love them. You simply have to be neutral about them, so the stress doesn't begin.
I started the project around 3pm. I gathered up my photos, created a cover, and wrote the text. It's not huge - the meat of it is 24 pages long. My aim is to sell this as an ebook for 99 cents. By 5pm I sent out a draft version to various groups to get feedback on them.
I'm now receiving that feedback. If any of you want to see it, let me know and I'm happy to send along any format you wish - DOC, EPUB, PDF, MOBI, etc. My plan is to post this on Amazon later tonight and set it as exclusive, to give away free copies. That should hopefully get thousands of copies out into the world and get me some reviews. Once that process has through, I'll set it to non-exclusive and post it on the Apple and Nook sides as well.
So by the end of this weekend it should be live on all three systems, hopefully have a review or two, and be selling.
Certainly part of why I can do this so streamlined is that I've done it before. That's true with everything in life. The counterpoint to that is that the only way to build practice in something is to do it.
So think about an ebook topic. It doesn't have to be huge! Focus in on something narrow. I didn't write about "conquering all phobias". I chose a very specific one. Fear of spiders. I wrote only about that. I created 24 pages on that topic. And I already have substantial traffic, on my SuttonMass.org page, on my spider pages. So I have a built in area to market it with. So that is key as well. Build on your strengths.
So again, think small. Think focused. Use a title that is rich in key words. Think in terms of a series. This is just one ebook of many. And then start. We have a book writing forum area, which is private just to us -
So post there and we'll help out! You can also email me directly, and I will chime in with ideas. I know I'm behind on email right now, but I'm working diligently on that. So email me, and post in the forum, and we'll get you going!
