HOT GERMAN POTATO SALAD RECIPE
It might seem strange but a Potato Salad is probably the most popular Christmas Eve meal in Germany.
Heiligabend, 24th December, used to be the last day of a fast which had started after St. Marten's, November 11, and a dish like this was one of those that was always served.
Although the fast is no longer kept the custom of having a large bowl of potato salad for the Christmas Eve meal, often accompanied by sausages of one type or another, has remained.
Potato salads are a favorite throughout Europe nowadays but the original Warm Potato Salads came from Germany, where hot vinegar and bacon dressings, originally served over all types of vegetables and later potatoes, were for centuries a staple of the country’s cuisine.
