Your Pocket or Mine

Catherine Hensley

His face was bright,
even though it shouldn’t have been.

Why did you do that?

I looked away,
as the men surrounded him.
He took out the tuna salad carton,
and then the egg salad,
from the pockets of his jacket.

Why would you do that?

I looked into his eyes,
as more men gathered around him.
And I saw not fear,
but shame.

My eyes burned in empathy.
