Fair Warning

Wayne Scheer

I don´t like being patronized
or being thought of as cute
just because my hair (what´s left of it)
resembles a Minnesota winter.

There´s a You Tube video
of an elderly man holding flowers
waiting at the airport
for his lady friend.

When he sees her, he breaks into a smile,
they hug and kiss,
he offers her the flowers
and takes her overnight suitcase.

Apparently, it´s gotten the number of hits
usually reserved for cats riding bicycles,
and people from TV newscasters to my grand kids
think the poor, old guy is “soooo cute.”

Bear cubs are cute,
but they grow up to become hairy behemoths
capable of ripping the heads off people
treating them like props in a Hallmark made-for-TV-movie.
