Pen Strokes

Lee Evans

I read it today -
Her letter to you,
Handwritten the way
They taught her in school.

In spite of the stroke
That smote her last year,
In cursive she wrote
To make herself clear.

I wish I had died
Back then, but I now
Can manage my side
Enough to allow

Myself my old joy,
To help the kids read,
And stitch them stuffed toys -
Rewards for their grades.

I stammer and slur,
Forget where I am;
And what the words were
I meant to have said.

For all I do wrong,
I´m trying my best -
While healthy and strong,
You settle for less.
