Easy Living

Armond Richards

I thought it would be easy
to toss aside scripture,
to dethrone a king, or to misspeak a picture.

I thought it would be easy
to live on in silence
while worlds are surrendered to iron and violence.

I thought it would be easy
to drown all ambitions
imagined in childhood and left to perdition.

I thought it would be easy
to say my farewells,
to be thrown from Heaven and welcomed in Hell.

I thought it would be easy
to burn down the bridges,
to feed this great fire of island religions.

I thought it would be easy
to disregard blood,
the rivers of ancestors drunk on old love.

I thought it would be easy
to move past a never
forgotten emotion we promised forever.

I thought it would be easy
to laugh life away,
but life is addicted and starving to stay.
