March 20 is the first Day of Spring. This is a welcome to change for those of us on the East Coast of the United States. We are happy to see those first colorful tulips.



International Listening Awareness Month Dedicated to learning more about the impact that listening has on all human activity. To promote the study, development and teaching of effective listening in all settings. For more information, www.listen.org.

International Mirth Month The merry month of March is set aside to encourage more mirthful moments. Its focus is to show people how to use humor to deal with not-so-funny stuff. For more information, www.allenklein.com.

National Collision Awareness Month A month of vehicle safety awareness to promote the use of seatbelts, child safety seats, safe driving in inclement weather, obeying speed limits and other safety tips for drivers.

National Talk with Your Teen About Sex Month The importance of frank talk with your teen about sex is emphasized. Parents are encouraged to provide their teenage children with current, accurate information and open lines for communication, as well as to support their self-esteem, reduce misinformation and guide teenagers toward making responsible decisions regarding sex. National Women’s History Month A time for re-examining and celebrating the wide range of women’s contributions and achievements that are too often overlooked in the telling of U.S. history. For more information, www.nwhp.org.

Spiritual Wellness Month As spring approaches this

March 1–5
National Newspaper in Education Week. A weeklong celebration of using newspapers in the classroom as living textbooks. For more information, www.naa.org.

3-A-Day Week. 3-A-Day Week begins on the third day of the third month of the third millennium. It’s a call to action for families to start eating 3-A-Day (servings) of dairy products to get the recommended daily calcium needs. For more information, www.3day.org.

Anonymous Giving Week. A time to celebrate the true spirit of giving. Experience joy in random acts of kindness, leave a legacy of anonymous contribution. For more information, www.legacyinstitute.com.

March 2
NEA’s Read Across America Day. A national reading campaign that advocates that all children read a book on March 2. Celebrated on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. For more information, www.nea.org/readacross.

March 7
Purim. Feasts, gifts, charity and the reading of the Book of Esther mark this joyous commemoration of Queen Esther’s intervention, in the Sixth century B.C., to save the Jews of ancient Persia.

March 17
Saint Patrick’s Day. Commemorates the patron saint of Ireland, Bishop Patrick (A.D. 389–461) who, abut A.D. 432, left his home in the Severn Valley, England, and introduced Christianity into Ireland.

March 20
First Day of Spring. In the Northern Hemisphere, spring begins with the vernal equinox, at 1:49 a.m. EST. In the Southern Hemisphere, fall begins at the same time.
