My name is Vannie and I am happy to be your Work & Family columnist and editor. I am hopeful that my articles will make your life a little easier and a little sweeter.
My aim is to give you information that will help you manage your business life as well as your home and family life so that the two become not one, but blended, wherein one will complement the other. Look for home, family and business hints through articles, book reviews and up-to-date facts and figures concerning work and family issues. Entrepreneurs and home and small business owners are most welcome here.
Many women are choosing to become SAHMīs, or stay at home moms. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (Item #CB05-FF.05) Among mothers with infant children in 2002, the percentage in the labor force is 55%, down from a record 59% in 1998. Many of these women have home businesses. Men have also become work at home dads, in some cases they have become stay at home dads in the same sense that women have in the past. You will find a column specific to the home business owner in the Work & Family "Making Ends Meet" column, and an our informative "On The Job" column for those with 9 to 5 careers outside of the home.
I have been asked how I can write about such diverse subjects and issues. I simply write about my what I know, love and value. I love cooking, reading and watching old movies. I come from a large close-knit family and as the eldest child and only girl, being a surrogate mother to my brothers was very natural. Since I spent my young adult years helping to raise my brothers, they were and still are able to talk to me about things they would never tell our parents. The fact that I was a few years older and their sister helped. Even now, our lives very much blend. I always that thought it was just a coincidence that we all share a love of old movies. However, a couple of years ago I discovered that we all love the Jersey shore as well. I guess itīs a family thing.
