Fair Play Book Review

I, as with many others, sometimes like to imagine what it must have been like to live in a certain period of time, through a specific event, or to have been acquainted with famous people from the past. Obviously, as a history geek, I enjoy well-written period pieces. That combined with my love of all things Texas (well, I am a Texan after all) sparked my interest in Deeanne Gist's book, Fair Play.

Imagine what it would have been like to have experienced the Chicago World's Fair back in 1893. The event spanned 6 months, was located on 600 acres, housed over 200 buildings, and attracted 26 million visitors. (1) Imagine what it would have been like to have been one of the first women to be awarded a medical degree in 1800s America. Imagine the thrill of speaking to a group at a women's suffrage convention. Deeanne Gist does exactly that in Fair Play. Set in Chicago in 1893, Billy Jack Tate is an accomplished female doctor whose desires the opportunity to establish a medical practice in Chicago. She accepts a position at the Chicago World's Fair where she meets a handsome Texas Ranger. As the story progresses and a romance blossoms, the values and goals of each are examined, tried and transformed.

Based on historical facts--allowing for some artistic leeway--Gist presents a well-written historical novel. Full of facts, fun, and Christian romance, this book is recommended for fans of historical fiction and Christian romance.
