Jade Buddha for Universal Peace

You donít have to be Buddhist to be inspired by this amazing piece of artwork. Carved from gem quality jade, this beautiful statue is breathtaking. It could be touring at a location near you soon!

Born of Spiritual inspiration and brought to life through many years of hard work and combined efforts, the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace is wonderful example of what can be created through working together. It also creates an opportunity for people from all religious paths to set aside their biases and focus on a more peaceful world.

Weighting in at over 4 tons and a towering 8 feet tall, this is an immense statue. Looking closely at the details, you can imagine just how many hours of carving went into its creation. The alabaster throne give a beautifully pale contrast to the dark green of the jade. There were 3 prototypes created before carving began on the piece of jade.

Why are they transporting this immense statue all over the world? From the official website: ďThe purpose of exhibiting the Jade Buddha around the world is for everyone, irrespective of their religion, to take a moment to reflect upon peace; peace for the world; peace in their relationships; peace for their families and friends; peace at work; peace in their mind. We hope that such positive inspiration will bring joy and motivation in the lives of those who are able to see the Jade Buddha.Ē

Buddha statues vary greatly in their representations and activities. This particular Buddha was modeled after the statue in Mahabodhi Stupa in Bodha Gaya located in India. The entire project took over 5 years to complete and involved Multi-national artisans combining their skills.

Close to 5 million people have already viewed the jade Buddha during itís tour. I snapped the picture to the right while viewing the Buddha at our local temple. The excitement and reverence from the crowd was quite contagious. It was wonderful to see the children running and playing and just being kids in the midst of such an important event. I was honored to be able to view the Buddha during the day as well as in the night.

The jade Buddha will be touring the world through 2011 before being installed in itís final home of the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo, Australia. You can check the official website to see if the Buddha will be visiting your area soon: http://www.jadebuddha.org.au/en/
