Today In …

1781 - American forces battled British forces in the Revolutionary War. The Battle of Cowpens, near King’s Mountain, South Carolina was fought today.

1806 - The first baby was born in the White House. Thomas Jefferson’s daughter, Martha, gave birth to James Madison Randloph.

1893 - The last ruler of Hawaii, Queen Liliuokalani, was forced to abdicate her throne.

1961 - After two terms in office, President Dwight D. Eisenhower gives his farewell address.

Sharing A Birthday Today…

Muhammad Ali a.k.a. Cassius Clay, the legendary boxing champion, was born in 1942.

Anne Bronte, the youngest of the Bronte sisters, was born in 1820. An author in her own right, Bronte’s books included “Agnes Grey” and “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall”.

Al Capone, the notorious crime/mob boss who would later be sent to prison for tax evasion, was born in 1899.

Jim Carrey, famed comedian and star of the films “Dumb and Dumber”, “The Truman Show” and “Me, Myself and Irene” was born in 1962.

David Caruso was born in 1956. The actor has starred in the TV series “NYPD Blue” and currently co-stars in the hit show “CSI: Miami”.

Steve Earle was born in 1955. This popular country/rock singer is behind such hits as “Copperhead Road” and “Guitar Town”.

Benjamin Franklin, legendary statesman and forefather of America, was born in 1706.

Susanna Hoffs was born in 1959. Hoffs is a member of the rock band The Bangles who are behind such hits as “Walk Like an Egyptian” and “Eternal Flame”. She also appeared as part of Austin Powers’ (Mike Myers) band, Ming Tea, in the “Austin Powers” films.

James Earl Jones, the star of such films as “The Great White Hope” (1970) and the voice behind Darth Vader in the “Star Wars” series was born in 1931.

Andy Kaufman, the comedian and actor, was born in 1949.

Maury Povich, the TV talk show host was born in 1939.

Vidal Sassoon, entrepreneur and stylist to the stars, was born in 1928.

Mick Taylor, the former guitarist for the Rolling Stones, was born in 1948.

Betty White, beloved comedian, animal activist and Emmy Award winning actress was born in 1922.

We Said Goodbye To…

Chang and Eng Bunker passed away in 1874. These entertainers were the world’s most famous conjoined twins. Because of the duo being from Siam, the medical term Siamese twins was originated. Chang and Eng were 62.

Domenico Ghirardelli is renowned by chocolate lovers worldwide. The man behind Ghirardelli chocolate passed away in 1894 at the age of 76.

Amber Hagerman was only 9 years old when she was brutally murdered in 1996. Although her case remains unsolved, the “Amber Alert” system named after her has saved a number of endangered children over the years.

Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States, passed away in 1893. Hayes was 70.

Juliette Gordon Law who founded the Girl Scouts of America passed away in 1927 at the age of 66.

Louis Comfort Tiffany who is best known for his artistic work with glass, especially the renowned Tiffany lamps passed away at the age of 84 in 1933.

1954 - The adventures of famed oceanographer/explorer Jacques Cousteau appear for the first time on TV.

Memorable Sports Moments In…

1916 - The Professional Golfers Association or PGA was formed today in New York.

In Print In…

1929 - The guy who loves spinach made his debut today! Popeye initially appeared in the comic “Thimble Theatre”.
