- The salt from perspiration will often affect the chemical processes of hair color and permanent waves. While a shampoo is customary before permanents, it is not often done before applying permanent hair color. If heavy perspiration is a part of your life, shampoo your hair with a cleansing shampoo before every hair color application as well as permanent wave. This will remove any salt residue and provide more satisfactory results.
