- Kissing Gourami - how romantic! Or at least it seems that way - the Gouramis aren't actually kissing, but it sure looks like it. Get yourself a couple of kissers in a 20-30 gallon tank (they will grow), place red gravel on the bottom, and red plastic plants to wave in the gentle breeze from the filter. Ah, amore!
- A Single Red Betta - instead of a long-stemmed rose, which will die anyway, why not surprise your love with a lovely red Betta fish (AKA, the Samurai Fighting Fish). His flowing fins and tail even look like a heart. Place him in a beautiful bowl or small tank, complete with romantic decor from your local pet shop. - Bleeding Heart Tetras - Okay, these little sweeties look like they are pining away for amore, with a red patch right over where the fishie heart should be. Since these like being in a school (5-6 individuals), don't put these in a tank alone...or they really WILL pine away.
- Angel Fish - add an Angel to your community tank, named after the angel in your life - whether that's a spouse, child, or your favorite parent!
- Guppies - Watching guppies pursue their ardor is fascinating! Make sure you have more females than males in your livebearer tank - or these sex-happy little male cuties will hound the girlies to death! A nice tank gift idea for your skirt-chaser son, or high-libido lover!
- Clown Fish - A touching gift to show your father you love him on Valentines - a couple of lovely clown fish, ala Finding Nemo, named for you and your dad! Since this is a marine fish, only go this route if dad's an experienced marine aquarist.
For a freshwater fish equivalent, I like the Clown Loaches. Those look pretty darn close to Nemo and Marlin, and are a lot easier to care for. Pick up a third Clown Loach, and you can have the whole mom, pop and child "family".
