Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! He Never Gave Up

Oh, the places he wentí because he didnít give up.

Have you read the catchy lines of Green Eggs and Ham or The Cat in the Hat out loud so many times to your children that youíve come to either adore or resent the man who wrote them?

March 2, 2004, is the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the most beloved childrenís book authorís of all time. Dr. Seuss, Theodore Geisel was born March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Mass. His pseudonym was created by using his motherís maiden name, which also happened to be his middle name, and the Dr. part was added because his father had always wanted him to be a college professor. Geisel credits his mother with his ability to make up the child-delighting rhymes that pepper his books because when he was a boy she used to make up rhymes for him at bedtime.

Geisel spent more than 15 years working as an illustrator for Standard Oil and other companies and creating cartoons for magazines. He persevered when his first book, And to Think I saw it on Mulberry Street, was turned down 27 times before it was finally published.

The Cat in the Hat, probably Geiselís most recognizable title, was written when he was asked to create a childrenís primer using only 225 words.

At the time of his death, Sept. 24, 1991, Theodore Geisel, the beloved Dr. Seuss, had written and illustrated 44 books that had been translated into 15 languages and 200 million copies of his work had found their way into the world. All because he didnít stop even after his work had been rejected 27 times.
