Today In …

1788 - Massachusetts officially became the sixth U.S. state.

1815 - The first railroad charter in the United States was issued to John Stevens in New Jersey.

1862 - Union forces, under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, won the Battle of Fort Henry in Tennessee during the Civil War.

1933 - The 20th Amendment, allowing the President’s term to begin on January 20th, took effect.

1935 - The first edition of the board game Monopoly went on sale today.

1952 - Elizabeth II became Queen of England when her father, George VI, passes. She would become one of the longest reigning monarchs.

Rick Astley, the British singer who sang the hit song “Never Gonna Give You Up” was born in 1966.

Eva Braun, the infamous companion of Adolf Hitler, was born in 1912.

Tom Brokaw, the former anchor of NBC news, was born in 1940.

Aaron Burr, former U.S. Vice-President who is probably best known for his duel against Alexander Hamilton, was born in 1756.

Natalie Cole, the songstress behind “Pink Cadillac” and the “Unforgettable” duet with her father, Nat King Cole, was born in 1950.

Fabian Forte a.k.a. Fabian, who sang such songs as “Turn Me Loose” was born in 1943.

Zsa Zsa Gabor the Hungarian actress who appeared in “Ninotchka” was born in 1917.

Bob Marley, the legendary reggae singer who sang the hit song “I Shot the Sheriff” was born in 1945.

Kathy Najimy, the actress who appeared in the comedies “Rat Race” and “Sister Act” was born in 1957.

Ronald Reagan, actor, Governor of California and 40th President of the United States was born in 1911.

Axl Rose, the lead singer of the rock band Guns N’ Roses, who had such hits as “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, “Paradise City” and “November Rain”, was born in 1962.

Babe Ruth, the legendary baseball hall-of-famer, was born in 1895.

Isidor Straus, former Congressman and owner of Macy’s Department Store, was born in 1845. He and his wife Ida perished during the Titanic sinking.

James “Jeb” Stuart, the infamous General during the Civil War, was born in 1833.

Rip Torn, the actor who’s appeared in “RoboCop”, “Men In Black” and “Dodgeball: An Underdog’s Story” was born in 1931.

We Said Goodbye To…

Arthur Ashe, the renowned Grand Slam tennis champion and later AIDS activist after contracting the disease from a blood transfusion during an operation, passed away in 1993 at the age of 49.

Falco, the singing sensation behind “Rock Me Amadeus” and “Der Kommissar” was killed in an automobile accident in 1998 at the age of 30.

George VI, the British monarch, passed away in 1952 at the age of 56.

Merle Kilgore, famed songwriter who wrote “Wolverton Mountain” and co-wrote “Ring of Fire”, passed away in 2005 at the age of 70.

Guy Madison, best known as TV’s Wild Bill Hickok passed away in 1996 at the age of 74.

Danny Thomas, the actor and comedian who starred in TV’s “Make Room For Daddy” but is probably best known for creating St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, passed away in 1991 at the age of 77.

Carl Wilson, one of the members of the legendary Beach Boys and who also sang lead on their hit “God Only Knows” passed away in 1998 at the age of 51.

1981 - George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reunited to record “All Those Years Ago” as a tribute to John Lennon.
