Moving Forward: Taking The Lead In Your Life, written by Dave Pelzer, is an amazing book that opens a whole new world to any survivor of child abuse.
Mr. Pelzer writes of the various tools for healing from an abusive past. These tools include letting go of past abuse, as well as the mental and emotional baggage that a survivor carries throughout their lifetime. Other tools are believing in themselves and their dreams, being a leader and a mentor to others, and standing firm on what they believe. Mr. Pelzer’s book is much like a roadmap in life for those that have been abused and want to regain control of their lives.
Every chapter has one section called, “My Personal Perspective” and another called, “Your Personal Perspective.” He shares from his own personal experiences as an abused child. Through both perspectives, the author walks the reader through the basics of each chapter, in order for the reader to apply what they have learned to their own life. Every chapter offers a glimpse into the reality of healing from child abuse, as well as being devoted to “moving forward.”
Moving Forward helps the survivor to realize their potential to move forward in their life. According to the author, whether or not one moves on is a personal choice. He encourages his readers to release the negativity that is within them and begin to focus on the positive things in life. Mr. Pelzer does not attempt to tell the reader that the memories will fade away and no longer occur. On the contrary, he confesses that he personally experiences the memories of his past; however, he chooses to let the memories go and move on with his life.
This book, Moving Forward, is a valuable resource in one’s healing process from child abuse. I believe it will inspire many survivors to finally be able to release the pains of their past. He writes in such a way that brings clarity to the reader and provides the optimism they need to grasp a hold of in order to move forward. I encourage all survivors of child abuse to read this book and to cling to the tools written of within the covers.
