Knitted Farm Animals Review

"Knitted Farm Animals" is a themed knitted collection pattern of adorable knitted toys. The patterns in Sarah Keen's latest book are three dimensional with sculptural details. Keen's previous book is a well-received collection of knitted jungle animals. In her latest book, Keen continues to provide patterns for well-shaped three-dimensional animals. These are not simply patterns for one animal body with different ears and sewn on faces. These animals have detail and shaping, which lends a more professional looking quality to the finished piece. For example, the knitted cow pattern includes curved horns and shaped cow snout, While the knitted chicken has a wide three dimensional belly and a ruffly comb.

The patterns seem mostly suited to advanced beginner or intermediate level knitters who are experienced in reading patterns and using shaping stitches. The pattern for a knitted egg may be suitable for a new knitter, but many of the other patterns include shaping, knitting different pieces or sections, grafting and sewing, embellishments such as some embroidery, and joining different colored pieces.

The animals are photographed in a way that the reader can see the shaping well. Many of the pattern instructions are written clearly. Most importantly, the animals are really cute. I didn't think I would be very impressed when I first saw the title of this book. I thought it would be a bunch of kitschy decorations or misshapen children's toys. These knitted animals are really cute, though.

I particularly liked the knitted horse. This could be done in several color combos for a horse loving girl. The chicken pattern is also well done, and could actually complement some country decorated homes without looking hokey.
