NGE Directors' Cut Resurrection

Neon Genesis Evangelion Directors' Cut: Resurrection is a DVD that contains both the "director's cut" versions and the original versions of episodes 21 through 23.

There is additional footage added to the first two episodes on the disc that make the episodes longer, while some of the footage in the third episode was reanimated to include hints of something that happens in the Neon Genesis Evangelion film, The End of Evangelion. I have to say that while the additional and revised scenes do provide some additional information, they really don't contain any major revelations that weren't included in the series. In the long run, you really aren't missing out on much if you have only seen the original broadcast versions of episodes 21 through 23.

On the main menu of the DVD there are three options: "Scene Access," "Communications," and "Extras." The "Scene Access" option allows you to choose which of the "director's cut" episodes to watch and where in the episode you want to start. "Communications" allows you to make your language option: English or Japanese with English subtitles. "Extras" takes you to the bonus material included on the DVD.

The first extra is a 21 minute sneak preview of a live-action Neon Genesis Evangelion film. There is a "clean opening" and a "clean closing," which are versions of the opening and closing credits without text. There are also DVD credits, as well as a link to a menu for ADV trailers. The trailers included on this disc are for: RahXephon, Full Metal Panic!, Noir, Najica Blitz Tactics, Angelic Layer, and Magical Shopping Arcade Abenoboshi.

If you're a fan of Neon Genesis Evangelion who is trying to track down the individual DVD releases, then this disc is worth it to you if you're trying to have everything released for Neon Genesis Evangelion in your DVD collection. However, if you're not a "completionist collector" and already have Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 0:7, then you really don't need to get this release, unless you absolutely want to own the "directors' cut" versions of these episodes. However, if you're missing Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 0:7 and can only find this disc, then this disc would be worth picking up to fill in the gap, since you get both versions of the episodes on it.

I wrote this review after watching a copy of this disc that I checked out through the King County Library System.
