Finding the Ultimate Honeymoon Destination

The beauty about honeymoons is that there are no rules! Make it as long or as short as you’d like (or at least according to your budget or time off from work). Go halfway around the world or just down the street.

Indulge your inner spa goddess, your love of cooking, your desire to just lie on a beach for a week. Share your passions for hiking, bicycling or skiing. Visit those museums or landmarks you’ve always wanted to see. Or help others on a volunteering vacation.

Let your imagination soar, and you’ll surely find the honeymoon destination that’s just perfect for you and your new spouse. Here are some categories to consider:

Active
There are dozens of ways to stay fit on your honeymoon. Consider a walking, hiking or bicycling vacation. Outfitters like Backroads and Butterfield & Robinson offer all sorts of itineraries all over the world. Think about a kayaking, scuba diving or skiing trip. You could also book a stay at a resort known for its golf course or tennis instruction.

Beach
Tropical destinations always top the lists of dream honeymoons. Hawaii and the Caribbean Islands are perennial favorites, but remember that the coasts of the U.S. Southeast have some great beaches (Florida, South Carolina), and Europe does, too (Italy, France, Spain). And of course there’s Central America: Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica…

Culture
Virtually any vacation could be turned into an exploration into a destination’s culture. Tour the Mayan ruins in Mexico, climb to the Incan city of Machu Picchu in Peru, learn about the aborigines in Australia. Visit Paris’ museums (even tour the city’s underground catacombs!), go to cooking school in Italy (hey, cuisine is part of a country’s culture!), enjoy the theatre in London. Brush up on American Revolution in Boston, tour monuments in Washington, D.C.—heck you could even learn about the history of surfing in Hawaii!

Safari
Get up close and personal with Africa’s Big Five: elephant, leopard, lion, rhino and buffalo. There are a number of outfitters in Kenya and Tanzania, the continent’s most popular destinations for safari travel. Check out: Heritage or Thomson.

Spa
Why not fully relax after dealing with all sorts of wedding stress with a massage every day! Destination spas aren’t just for women, and can, in fact, be quite romantic. See if any of these world-renowned spas offer treatments just for couples:
Baja, Mexico: Rancho La Puerta
Phoenix, Arizona: Miraval
St. George, Utah: Green Valley Spa

Volunteer
Spend your honeymoon giving back. You might help plant a community garden, teach swimming at a camp for autistic kids or build a house for a low-income family. Opportunities abound all over the world. For ideas, visit the “Volunteer Vacations” section at Charity Guide.

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to how you spend your honeymoon—have fun selecting a vacation destination that’s just right for you!
