
The Art Institute of Chicago is exhibiting 105 portraits of photographer James VanDerZee spanning over 60 years, in its Gallery 1. The James VanDerZee Studio exhibition will remain until April 25, 2004.
A portion of a news release from the AIC states [Vanderzee] "...created such innovative techniques as the photo montage—multiple images in a single picture. He also experimented with flash powder and learned how to judge light conditions without benefit of a light meter. His meticulous darkroom techniques not only flatter his subjects but also add a psychological and ethereal dimension to everyday images...".
