Getting Lucky Review

Freelance writer Robyn Guthrie was sharing a weekly luncheon date with her mother at a local restaurant when she found out from the editor of the local paper that an acquaintance of hers was killed by a hit and run driver the night before. Clair was a young reporter and co-worker at the weekly paper and was working on several stories at the time of her death.

Although she was not interested in the topic, Robyn soon agreed to take over one of the investigative articles Clair had been working on. She was investigating a new housing development that was being built using “green” products.

During her investigation of the Cedar Ridge story, she met an environmentalist who was undercover and looking into irregularities in the building of the complex. She also found there were mob connections as well as toxic waste disposable inadequacies, prime reasons why Clair may have been a target by those who did not want the story to come to light.

In the meantime, Robyn also must contend with her mother who is pressuring Robyn to buy a house with her so they can live together – the last thing Robyn needs in her life. Her mother is also showing increasing signs of dementia. As if that were not enough, her boyfriend thinks maybe he should find someone else because he wants children and Robyn does not.

The deeper she got into the story, the more Robyn realized she was putting her own life in danger. Wanting to successfully complete what her friend had started and find out the truth about the housing development, Robyn continued to press forward despite all personal and professional challenges.

Getting Lucky was written by DC Brod in what is turning out to be a new “green” murder mystery series following her first novel, Getting Sassy. In Robyn Guthrie, Brod has created a lively and outspoken main character that is willing do just about anything to get the story she wants.

Well-written in the first person, readers get to enjoy the story line pretty much as it happens. The pace moves along at a satisfying speed and the characters are believable.

Readers will enjoy the quick pace, depth of a good mystery story, and the hope of future Robyn Guthrie stories.
