Monday June 11 was the first Starburst tournament for boys at Mill Creek in 2012. There will be two tournaments as on Wednesday the girls come for their event. This is the third year Mill Creek has been hosting this tournament. Starburst is from Waco and they set up these tournaments and invite all young boys and girls who love to play golf to play in these events. They choose different golf courses to hold them and Mill Creek has always volunteered. To accommodate the tournament our Manager Matt Sommerfield has offered to have these events on our course. It is well received as this brings in added revenue for our club.
To make a tournament like this successful Matt has asked for volunteers from the membership to have their golf carts available to shuttle players around the course. Since our massive flood two years ago we still have not brought back several holes that were devastated by the flood. This means there is quite a distance between some of the holes, so to speed things up the memberís shuttle the players over these gaps. Mill Creek has been part of this Starburst tournament for the last three years and I have volunteered to help shuttle the players. We were asked to be at the club house at 7:30 a.m. as tee off was at 8:00. We were given a special Starburst blue golf shirt to wear as all the volunteers and workers for the tournament wore these shirts.
I asked to take the run from the #5 hole to the #6 hole and it is by way of one of the main streets in Mill Creek and quite a distance. I wanted these golf holes as #5 tee and green are close to where I live. The golf hole is a par three so it is fun to watch the tee shots coming towards the green. The number five hole is quite difficult as two sand traps cover two sides of the green. It is out of bounds just back of the green and along both fairways. A ditch with rocks and water are in front and below the green. Of course there are trees on either side of the fairway and around the green. Today they placed the pin down in front of the green and the green slants downhill from back to front so make for tricky putts.
The players today were very polite and went about their golf game very serious but they still managed to tell us thank you as they appreciated the ride. The parents, grandparents and friends who follow their special golfer trail along in a rented card from the course. That means on some runs we were not needed unless they had never played here before and did not know where they needed to go for the next tee off. All went off very well and was home before 1:00 p.m. A great day and worth the time spent with these young golfers.
