Poppy by Riana Lucas - a review

Poppy buy Riana Lucas is the first book in The Deadly Flowers series about the faery realm. Poppy is a young unseelie fae warrior who is trained to retrieve halflings from the human world. Her latest mission should be easy, but for one detail-- the Seelie Queen is threatening to close the portals between the faery world and the human world. If she isn't quick enough she'll be trapped in the human world and Poppy has an intense dislike for humans and their world. She finds the halfling, Reed, is unusually receptive to the new that he is half fae and must go with her to the Seelie court. In fact, many things about Reed suggest that his mother understood his fae side. In their time looking for a way back the the faery realm, Poppy teaches Reed about his magical abilities, but she also learns about friendship and loyalty.

There's something very simplistic about Poppy that makes it enjoyable for any age. I did find the writing had a somewhat choppy feel to it (which I think was meant to show Poppy's personality as the narrator), but the dialogue was largely well done enough to show Reed's character. There's just enough of a twist at the end to keep my interest for book two, but I also felt the ending was way too abrupt.

My Recommendation
Despite the somewhat halting narrative, Poppy by Riana Lucas is a nice diversion. Although not on the level of great epics, this is a quick read that would be enjoyed by fantasy fans of all ages.
