Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Study after study has shown that kids who eat breakfast perform better in school and are less likely to be obese. If you have a son who doesn’t like breakfast food, though, what are you to do? In order to ensure that your son eats this most important meal, consider one of these non-traditional options.
1. Breakfast cookies. Although the idea of cookies for breakfast may seem slightly ridiculous, it actually makes a lot of sense. A quick Google search will bring up dozens of breakfast cookie recipes. Try several and then make one your own. The basic recipe will use good quality oats as a base and will use whole wheat flour, as opposed to white. Some use honey as a sweetener rather than sugar, and the varieties of add-ins are endless. Your son truly will not realize that he is eating anything healthy. Best of all, this breakfast is so portable that he can eat it on the way to school.
2. Last night’s leftovers. I know that this suggestion goes against the grain of many moms, but if your son doesn’t like breakfast food, let him eat dinner for breakfast. As long as you are making balanced and nutritious meals for dinner, that meal will still be balanced and nutritious at breakfast.
3. Fruit and cheese or fruit and peanut butter. Combining the fiber in the fruit and the protein in the cheese or peanut butter will give your son the power breakfast he needs to have a great day. He won’t feel like he’s eating breakfast, either.
4. Fruit smoothie. Yes, a fruit smoothie is breakfast for moms, but kids tend not to see it that way. Blend vanilla yogurt, orange juice, and fresh fruit and pour it into a cup with a straw. Your son will feel like he’s drinking a shake!
5. Protein bars. Again, for moms protein bars are breakfast, but kids often think of them as snacks. Aim for a bar that has at least 10 grams of protein and is low in sugar.
Breakfast really is an important meal. Just because your son doesn’t like cereal (cold or hot), pancakes, eggs, and waffles does not mean that he should head for school on an empty stomach. There are plenty of other choices if you’re willing to think slightly outside of the box!
