Vividred Operation

Vividred Operation is an anime series produced by A-1 Pictures, and was directed by Kazuhiro Takamura.

Vividred Operation is set in peaceful futuristic world, and peace was made possible through the invention of the Manifestation Engine. The story of the series takes place on the island of Izu Oshima, where the main character of the series lives.

Akane Isshiki is the main character of the series, and her grandfather is the scientist who invented the Manifestation Engine; her grandfather also discovered an alien force called Alone, but no one in the government believed him on the the Alone.

Akane is a middle school sophomore who lives with her grandfather and little sister on Izu Oshima. She's an energetic and honest girl who works part-time jobs to help support her family. She also has a fear of heights due to an accident that happened when she was younger. During the first episode, the Alone attack Izu Oshima, and Akane's grandfather gives her a battle suit he created called the Vivid System to fight against the Alone.

Aoi Futaba is Akane's classmate and best friend. She comes to Izu Oshima from Blue Island for medical treatment. In the first episode, Aoi arrives in Izu Oshima and also gains access to the Vivid System. Together, the two girls become part of a group to fight against the Alone.

The first episode sets up an interesting premise, but it just wasn't quite enough to convince me to continue watching any time in the immediate future. From spoilers I've read for the second episode, it sounds like the Vivid System is going to potentially become a rather strange concept.

To me, one of the highlights of Vividred Operation was the animation. The backgrounds are gorgeous, and character movement is rather fluid. While some elements in the animation that utilize computer graphics stand out a little bit, they don't stand out as drastically as they could have.

When I watched the first episode, I did see a few "fanservice" shots. From what I've read in spoilers for the second episode, it sounds like there could be more "fanservice" than what appeared in the first episode. Between watching the first episode and reading about the second episode, I would personally recommend Vividred Operation to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
