Fowle has an interesting story, mostly focused on the fight between the first and the chimeras. I loved that the vampires are not overly romanticized. Zeke really seems like a race apart from humans and his interest in Alex seems almost like a curiosity. The strengths in The First Night are the characters and the action. The weakness is several spots of amateurish writing. The first chapter was hard to follow as there are no names used, only vague pronouns.
My Recommendation
The First Night by M.S. Fowle is an action filled tale of vampires and monsters with a unique interpretation of these old archetypes. While there are some structural problems, especially in the beginning, the story is fun to read. The First Night is a quick read that would interest any readers of dark fantasy.
