Today In …

1794 - The cotton gin was patented by Eli Whitney.

1812 - War Bonds were issued in the U.S. for the first time.

1950 - The “Ten Most Wanted” list was introduced by the F.B.I.

1964 - Jack Ruby was found guilty of killing Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of assassinating John F. Kennedy.

1967 - The body of John F. Kennedy was permanently moved to its present location in Arlington Cemetery.

1991 - The Birmingham Six were freed after spending sixteen years in prison for bombing a pub. The court ultimately decided that the evidence had been false.

Hank Ketcham the creator of the comic strip “Dennis the Menace” was born in 1920.

Chris Klein the actor who appeared in “American Pie” and “We Were Soldiers” was born in 1979.

Wolfgang Petersen the man behind the camera of “Air Force One”, “The Perfect Storm” and “Troy” was born in 1941.

Lee Petty the legendary race car driver was born in 1914.

Merlin Santana who appeared on TV’s “The Cosby Show” and “Moesha” was born in 1976.

Taylor Hanson one-third of the musical group Hanson was born in 1983.

Busby Berkeley the man behind the camera of such films as “The Gang’s All Here” passed away in 1976 at the age of 80.

George Eastman the founder of Eastman Kodak passed away in 1932 at the age of 77.

Susan Hayward the actress who starred in “I’ll Cry Tomorrow” passed away in 1975 at the age of 57.

Karl Marx theorists and author of the “Communist Manifesto” passed away in 1883 at the age of 64.

Chic Young the creator of the cartoon “Blondie” passed away in 1973 at the age of 72.
