Twist and Turns of the Mill Creek Sale

Over the last ten months I have been a part of the board to buy the Mill Creek Golf Course. It had many twist and turns that started with Terry Dill the Professional Golfer who took an interest in upgrading our golf course from serious flood damage to the course. I enjoyed working with this board as it had a variety of people interested in saving the course. Things did not go smoothly as with any small town people are too well acquainted with each other of all their good qualities and their faults.

Terry was full of ideas and had the experience with upgrading golf courses and had the name that would attract golfers. He also turned off some people with his enthusiasm in trying to get people interested in his idea of making the course a member owned club with loans to buy the course from the owner Morris Foster. As month after month went by moving into 2013 we found ourselves short of the needed capital.

There were other groups who also were interested in buying the golf course but not a member owned with loans. One such group started up the second time and we heard they were having a meeting and some of our board decided to attend to see what they had to offer. I have written about this in a previous article. It seemed to me that there could be a good chance the two groups could get together. As it turned out they did get together and we were notified of a possible joining. We were told that it would stay as a 501-c7 non-profit with the name of Salado Golf Club at Mill Creek.

Within a week after a large group meeting to inform interested people that we were again found short of needed funds to buy the golf course. Within the next seven days all things have changed as the Billy Helm group of investors announced that they have formed a Corporation and will be buying the golf course. It also has been announced in the Temple newspaper this group plan to meet on July 4th to establish their organization and be ready to take over on July 15th.

I wish this group success as they prepare to take over the management of Mill Creek. My only desire was to see this golf course brought back to its original beauty of all 27 holes. I will help in every way I can and hope there are no more rumors, gossip or accusations toward one another as happens so often in a small community. We can all work together to bring back this great golf course and meld our talents to make sure it happens. It has been a rough ride these ten months but when it ends up with the course purchased from the owner and plans to restore it to its original scenic beauty we all will be satisfied
