Ariel Castro Suicides in Prison

This week the news broke that Ariel Castro the Cleveland kidnapper who abducted and held three women Michelle Knight, Georgina DeJesus, and Amanda Berry in captivity for years was dead. According to various news sources, authorities confirm, Ariel Castro, is dead. Castro found dead in his prison cell during the scheduled 30-minute safety rounds on September 3, 2013.

Ariel Castro declared deceased at 10:52 pm, by the medical staff, at the Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University. Coroner Dr. Jan Gorniak, reported to CNN, “Ariel Castro, 52, was found hanged with a bed sheet Tuesday night.” The cause of death appears to be suicide, but the Correctional Reception Center in Orient has requested an independent investigation to determine what happened.

July 26, Ariel Castro appeared in court, pleading guilty to over 900 criminal charges ranging from sexual assault, kidnapping, and aggravated murder that the State of Ohio filed against him. Judge Michael J. Russo labeled Castro as a sex offender. Castro disagreed with this label insisting in court that he was not a violent sex offender because he did not beat his victims.

Nothing Castro did like kidnapping the three women, chaining them to the walls of his basement, and repeatedly raping them would be considered aggressive in any way. In addition, during his court appearance Castro portrayed himself as a victim, even placing some of the blame on his victims. He never accepted responsibility for his actions.

Judge Michael J. Russo sentenced him to life in prison plus 1000 years. Child molesters and child predators are at the bottom of the totem pole in the prison hierarchy. Castro did not interact with other prisoners, for his security, upon his arrival at the prison. His cell was in a different area according to prison officials.

Ariel Castro’s Attorney Craig Weintraub, according to CNN, “questions the suicide” and “feels said more precautions against a possible suicide should have been taken.” While, the prosecuting attorney, Timothy J. McGinty, was not sympathetic toward Castro even in death, stating to CNN, “These degenerate molesters are cowards.”

While some people will celebrate his suicide, others will condemn it; however, the reality is that the world is a little bit safer now that there is no chance Ariel Castro will ever walk out of jail. What is remarkable is that in just over a month’s time Castro took the cowardly way out and committed suicide by hanging, after just over a month in captivity.

Did he at the end, begin to understand the impact of his actions or the effects of his actions on Michelle Knight, Georgina DeJesus, Amanda Berry or the child born in captivity?
