For any golfer who does not know the name Eddy Lowery is not a dedicated golfer. Well maybe he knows the name Francis Ouiment and that should help them to remember the 10 year old caddie for Francis when he beat out the national known golfers from England.

So we ask whatever happen to little Eddy Lowery and you will find it in this book The Match written by Mark Frost. Jack also wrote the book The Greatest Game Ever Played a great account of the match of Francis Ouiment against the biggest golfers of that time in the 1920’s. I enjoyed that book so much and ordered this book to find out about what happened to Eddy Lowrey.

The author gives a good background description of Eddy’s years following that big event. He became involved in amateur golf as he said he loved golf but wanted to pursue a regular career. He continued to play in amateur golf outings and became a wealthy car dealer in California in the 1950’s. Eddy continued his interest in amateur golf as an avid supporter of these events.

Two of Eddie’s employees Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi were exceptional golfers that Eddy supported. With one of Eddy’s friends a wealthy George Coleman made a bet, that these two employees could beat anybody in a best-ball match. Coleman accepts the challenge and turns up for the match with Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson.

Coleman’s challengers were the biggest winners of fourteen national champions between them. This book The Match describes this great event in great detail of all the people involved. Mark Frost keeps the reader interested as to the wide open days of the 1950’s.

As any golfer knows what happened to Ken Venturi and he remembers that event as he says, no one will ever see an event like this again. He says that if he hadn’t been part of it he would never believe that it happened.

The Author Mark Frost weaves the background of all the big players in this book. That is why I love books like this it tells you how these golfers got started and from the rugged life they led. Golf became their salvation and led up to this big match game. Gambling was a sport for these millionaires like Eddy Lowrey so this book is a delightful read because of golf and the completion between players and the gamblers.
