As a digital artist, one option for selling your artwork is to sell digital scrapbooking products such as digital papers and embellishments. Also popular are digital fonts, journaling cards, word art and brushes. As you might imagine, it is very difficult to get a job as a digital scrapbook product designer, due to the competition. So, where else can you sell your digital products? What are your options?

Your first consideration is creating the digital products in the correct file format. The second consideration is that you will need to manage your payment processing and downloadable digital files. How will you get the download to the customer? Not all third party payment processors support digital downloads.

Digital scrapbook papers are usually 12 x 12 inches at 300 dpi and jpg format. Digital embellishments are usually 300 dpi in png format, because of the transparent background. That's easy enough.

If you are not creating your papers digitally via Photoshop^R, you will need to scan your physical artwork into Photoshop. If you don't have a 12 x 12 scanner, your local print shop, such as Kinkos, may be able to help. Unless you are very luck with the scan, you will need to make some color adjustments to the scanned image. Most scanners aren't that good at duplicating color. It's an RGB vs CMYK color mode issue.

Once you have the digital files in the correct format and zipped up neatly into a zip file for your customer to download, you are ready to sell them online. Check out places that sell digital scrapbooking papers such as Scrap Girls^R, Scrapbook.com etc. If you can't get in as a designer at one of these online stores, you can try Etsy^R and other places that allow you to sell download files. As far as I know, Etsy and Creative Market^R are the only online market places specifically for selling digital art as digital downloads.

Since you will need a blog or website to show off your products, another option is to use a third party digital file management and delivery service such as Payloadz^TM or Gumroad. These places do not have a market place but will handle the payment process and send download links to your customers. With this type of service, you will use buy buttons on your website/blog that will take the customer to the Payloadz or Gumroad website for processing. Also, there is no shopping cart system. So the customer can only buy one item at a time as opposed to adding items to a cart and checking out only once.

If you want to deal with secure payments and downloads yourself from your website, you can use Paypal^R for processing with a shopping cart such as Zen Cart^TM. The shopping cart will allow your customers to add more than one item to the cart before check out, which gives the customer a better shopping experience. If you do go with this option, you will need an SSL certificate which you will get from your web host. This SSL layer encrypts the passing of payment information. Besides the security of the payment process itself, you will also need to securely store your customer's credit card numbers and other information. One reason that PayPal is so popular is because PayPal takes care of this security.

There are many shopping cart software packages available on the web besides Zen Cart, but it is the most popular. Just do a search for shopping cart software.
