DeMontay Thompson Escapes Kidnapper

As parents the stories we see on the news are terrifying, one second a child is playing safely in his yard and the next he is gone. The following story is one that both parents and children can learn a lot.

DeMontay Thompson recently disappeared in an instant when he was playing in his front yard. DeMontay’s Mom just stepped inside the house for a second when DeMontay disappeared. When she came back out and her son was gone, it was the worst moment of her life.

What happened next does not happen enough in our crazy world. DeMontay who is only 8-years-old, manages to escape from his kidnapper. He kicked and struggled until he got away and then he ran home.

How dumb are criminals? Well in a move of total stupidity, the kidnapper, Rodrick C. Wright, returns to the same street the next day. DeMontay immediately recognizes the man and proceeds to alert his parents that the man is back.

DeMontay’s mom and dad chased the man into a local barbershop. The man runs into a barbershop yelling repeatedly, “It wasn’t me!” The mother asks him “what are you talking about” and when he does not answer her, she informed him he was going to go to jail. The police arrive and take the man to jail. Wright is facing a possible life sentence if convicted.

DeMontay is a wonderful tribute to show that if parents talk to their kids it can make a difference. Someone told DeMontay how to get away, and someone told DeMontay what to do if someone tries to lure him away. What is even more important is DeMontay knew to that if he was frightened he should run, not walk, to find a grown up and tell him or her happened.

As frightened, as DeMontay was he managed to do exactly as someone taught him to do, he kicks and screams and manages to break free from his attacker. The 8-year-old ran home to tell his parents what happened. The rest is amazing history in Kansas City Missouri.

Kids pay attention to your surroundings and remember to think and do not panic and you will know what to do when an emergency arises. Way to go DeMontay!
