So, you've bought or been given a brand new deck – now what?
First of all, there are many common myths about Tarot decks that we should clear up. One of the main myths is about acquiring the deck itself. It is completely acceptable to purchase a deck, even your first one, for yourself. Many people claim a first deck should be a gift and that it is somehow unlucky or unwise to purchase one. This is false and purchasing your own may actually be preferable. This allows you to look through several options and find the one that most speaks to you.
Secondly is a myth that you need to “cleanse” a brand new Tarot deck. This is not entirely true either, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't infuse that deck with your own energy. You can do this by looking through your cards one by one and really taking some time with them. Let their imagery speak to you and bring your imagination to life. Take notice of how they make you feel and how you respond to them. Move slowly and methodically through every card at least one time and that process should allow you to develop an intuitive connection. Do it more than once if you feel it necessary.
Should you purchase a used Tarot deck? This subject is often debated. Personally, I prefer to acquire new decks, however in the case of rare collectible Tarot I can certainly see how it might be fine to purchase a gently used deck. In this instance, I would thoroughly cleanse the cards of their energies before using them myself.
Storage and Use
Storing Tarot decks is as much about practicality and extending the life of your deck as it is about ritual. Make sure that your deck is stored in an environment that is free from humidity. If possible, wrap your deck in cloth before storing to help preserve the card stock. Wrapping the deck can also keep it protected from the influences of external energies. I keep my decks neatly wrapped or in specially designed deck boxes and place those inside a drawer.
Unfortunately, many of the decks printed in recent years have been reproduced on flimsy card stock that leaves a lot to be desired. It can be very frustrating to open a brand new deck and have your cards be the consistency of business card stock. For this reason, things like how you shuffle them become very important. I recommend learning to shuffle gently, never bending the cards and preferably not rifling them too much to extend their life.
