Healthy Days In February

We take a look at the important health observances and the dates they fall on in February.

February 1st

Women’s Heart Health Day falls on February 1st each year. The event helps to raise awareness and to educate the public about the risks and ways to combat heart disease, one of the leading causes of death, in women.

February 2nd

Another event that helps to raise awareness about women’s heart disease is National Wear Red Day. All over the country a number of health organizations including the American Heart Association and WomenHeart are promoting the campaign and encouraging people to participate. How do you take part? Be sure to don your favorite red attire or you can purchase and wear the “National Wear Red Day” event’s official red dress pin to support this cause!

February 3rd

The American Dental Association sets aside February 3rd as Give Kids A Smile Day. Good dental hygiene is important to everyone, especially children. The goal of the “Give Kids a Smile Day” is to raise awareness about the importance of dental care and dental programs for children.

February 7th

Since 1997, February 7th has been National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Originally started as a program with the Center for Disease Control, the event has grown with the goal of this day to not only be tested for HIV/AIDS virus but to educate people about the virus. The event encourages personal involvement, community education and treatment for those who may be infected.

Girls and Women In Sports Day has been celebrated since 1987. This event takes place on February 7th and is in honor of women and girls of all ages who participate in athletic and sporting events.

February 14th

Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day is February 14th. The day is used to create public awareness about the threat of congenital heart defects in infants which is a leading cause of death in newborns.

Valentine’s Day happens to also be National Condom Day. Doctors and other medical facilities promote the use of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies.

National Donor Day is also February 14th. The day celebrates the lives of those who have donated blood, organs and tissues. It also honors the families who have had to make the difficult decision to donate the organs of a loved one.
