Knot Stitch (otherwise known as Lattice Stitch)

Knot Stitch Crochet / Variations on Solomons Knot stitch.

These stitches follow the same principle for making the Solomons Knot stitch, however instead of linking to the centre Knot on the row beneath to make an X, the long knot stitches are carried along parallel to the previous row. The rows of Knots are attached to the previous row by either Single Crochet or Double Crochet the different stitches provide a greater or lesser distance between the rows. The other slight variation is that a Single Crochet stitch is worked into the top side edge of the Single or Double Crochet stitch to even the appearance of the stitches each row.

This stitch is also referred to as Lattice Stitch and is referred to in antique and vintage crochet books and patterns. This is a light and lacy stitch and is suitable for items such as scarves and shawls. It would also work well, if crocheted with a cotton or thread to make bags attractive bags.

Try working a sample square with some craft cotton and see what you think! These instructions use US stitch definitions for everyone else substitute Treble Crochet for US Double Crochet and substitute Double Crochet for US Single Crochet.

To work the Crochet Knot Stitch.

Use the instructions here to learn how to make the Knot.

Row 1 (Foundation row): Make the foundation chain which should be multiples of 4. Make 3 turning chain then Double Crochet into the 4th chain from the hook. Then work as follows * Make 1 knot by drawing the chain to about 1/2 inch and then single crocheting in to the back thread of the stitch; miss 3 chain and Double Crochet into the 4th chain. Work a Single Crochet into the top of the last Double Crochet made (this sounds more confusing than it is simply poke the hook through the strands at the top left hand side of the Double Crochet stitch, draw the yarn through and work a Single Crochet as normal) * . Repeat from * to * leaving three chain stitches each time.

Row 2 and subsequent rows: Repeat as above, making the Double Crochet stitch into the top of the Double Crochet stitch in the previous row.

Variations: Try using a Single Crochet instead of the Double Crochet this will give a more compact fabric.
