The Holidays and the Diabetic

Itís all ready here, Halloween. Let the festivities begin. However as a diabetic most celebrations are mine fields. What are you to do?

1. Inform your host/hostess of your medical condition and see if they can accommodate your dietary needs.

2. Going to a potluck. Make sure you bring something you can eat. Yes, you can try everyone elseís dishes but only a bite or two.

3. Going to a work related Holiday party. Remember you donít have to eat everything that is on your plate. Only eat what you can and enjoy the company and surroundings.

4. Maintain your exercise program. This is difficult but it will make you feel better in the long run. Be the exception and not the rule of gaining ten pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

5. Do something for others. Most of the holidays revolve around food, try to find another activity. Go to the Santa Tree or find an event at your local place of worship.

6. Try new recipes. Tired of the same old dish? Try something new, with the cookbook options out there you can find some dish to bring to a potluck on your plan.

7. Make a new friend or become a big sister/big brother. Find ways to keep yourself busy.

8. Forgive your friends. Remember they mean well, but sometimes diabetes is hard to understand. If they give you forbidden fruit, thank them and then donate it to a local shelter.

9. Shop! Shop! Shop! Window shop and walk the mall a few times before picking up that Christmas purchase. This way you can get added exercise you need.

10. Treat yourself. Allow at least one or small treats during the holiday season. You might otherwise feel deprived and then binge. One or two small treats wonít hurt as long as you keep your normal routine.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
