Planning a Trip to Italy?

Planning a trip to Italy? Not sure how best to allocate your time? Try to include a combination of cities, seaside resort towns and smaller rural towns. The following destinations would be a great foundation for a first-time Italian travel itinerary.

Below is a suggested itinerary to capture a balance of Italy's highlights:

Rome (2-3 days)

Venice (1-2 days)

Florence (1-2 days)

Umbria and Tuscany (2-3 days)
- Assisi, Lucca, Orvieto, Perugia, Pisa, San Gimignano, Siena

Italian Riviera (2-3 days)
- Cinque Terre, Portofino, Santa Margherita

Amalfi Coast and Capri (2-3 days)
- Pompeii, Positano, Ravello, Sorrento

These suggestions are based on a two-week schedule. If you have more time, or you have a preference for one type of destination over another, please adjust your itinerary accordingly. If you find your dream destination along the route – stay on and forget the rest of the suggestions! Never be a slave to an itinerary.

If you have more time, consider the Lakes in the north or Sicily in the south.
